You purchase insurance to protect your home, property and business in the case of disaster, but do you protect your data with regular backups?

We often take for granted that our computers will keep running, but when they let us down, it can cost us a lot.  I’m not just speaking about money here either–the biggest loss of all is the irreplaceable data we’ve collected in our accounting, personal documents and family photos.

Many people make “backups” or copies of their data that they keep on USB sticks or external USB drives, but backups such as these are limited in their value.    If your PC fails or is burned up in a fire, you will need to rebuild everything from scratch before restoring your backed up data—after all, you can’t use the data without the applications that made it!   This is not only time-consuming and expensive but aggravating as well because not only do you have to rebuild everything—you have to re-configure everything back to the way you like it—usually from memory or multiple support calls to vendors!

Consider the cost of typical losses:

  • Losing your accounting data, Ag data and the software to view it.
  • Losing your customer data and the applications that enabled you to work with it
  • Losing your family photograph collection and organization system
  • Losing your email history and access to it
  • Losing licenses for software you paid for

In these situations, you need to get Windows back to a healthy state–it will be different from what you had so you may find application incompatibility issues.  Next, you download and install all the software you lost.  Vendors will want your licensing to be valid and that will require multiple phone calls or validations.  Next, you need to re-configure the application like it used to be was so that it behaves correctly.  Finally you need to copy your data into the locations expected and see if the whole rebuild worked.  If it doesn’t, then you spend more time with tech support to figure out what is wrong.

As you can see, the data has value, but the systems that we’ve built over time are valuable too!  Rebuilding them can be a nightmare.  Often we never get back what we originally had and it takes days or sometimes weeks to find out it doesn’t work right.

So what’s the solution?

The solution is to backup not only your data but also your applications, settings and operating system in a way that is automatic, efficient, cost-effective and above all else—reliable.
